I was a Rotoscope Artist for 6 busy years. What on earth is that you might ask? Rotoscoping is an animation technique which traces over characters or objects to hold out or remove elements, often frame by frame. It can also help add elements, like a glow on a swinging sword. For example, if I rotoscoped a stationary rock, then a computer-generated character could run in behind it, like the apes in Planet of the Apes.
Weta Digital - the globally renowned, award-winning VFX company (now known as Weta FX) is a special place to work, seeing films like The Hobbit trilogy and The Jungle Book get completed was really cool.
Within that era, I also got to be involved in the colourisation of black & white images that were taken during WWI during the Gallipoli campaign, for The Great War Exhibition developed by Sir Peter Jackson.
Learning multiple complex softwares and requiring a high level of accuracy was a really beneficial experience. Overall, I am very proud of being part of the Optical team that helped get these films delivered.
